Behind the beans
In Rwanda, specialty coffee is produced mostly by smallholder farmers and their families. Many don’t have the ability to process coffee themselves, so washing stations in coffee growing communities play a major role in the production of coffee. Horizon is located in the southern part of Rwanda, in Duye District. Here, the combination of high altitude and good rainfall allow for coffee trees to flourish and produce some of the highest quality coffees from the country. This natural process Red Bourbon is sweet and complex, bursting with notes of strawberry and lychee with a creamy body.
Origin: Duye District, Rwanda
Horizon must be one of the most beautiful sites in the Southern Province. The small 3 hectare area sits long in the valley with steep slopes surrounding it. Pineapples grow on the verges and avocado trees line the walk down to the site. It is owned by Fidel Ndagijima who has used his wealth of experience to update the equipment and implement protocols that allow the mill to produce high quality coffees. In addition, farmers receive organic fertilizer from the station consisting of recycled cherry pulp, which is fermented with lime and molasses.
