Behind the beans
Coffee produced in Burundi makes up just 1% of the global market. It is predominantly a smallholder activity, with most estates only having between 50-250 plants. This washed coffee is Lot 608 from the Rugabano Washing Station in the Ruvubu National Park. It has a beautifully delicate and sweet flavour profile. Tasting notes of red grape, ripe melon and florals are at the forefront, with chamomile and white sugar lingering on the finish.
Origin: Ruvubu, Burundi
Rugabano washing station is part of the Akawa Project - an initiative set up by Keynote and Supremo to establish a stable and fair supply chain in Burundi. 11 washing stations have been selected so far, with premiums being paid to ensure farmers are well trained in good farm management practices. The producers in this region grow the Bourbon varietal, with rich volcanic soil giving the ideal growing conditions.
