How much for a flat white!?
If you’ve noticed your daily brew going up in price, you’d be right. The coffee industry is navigating it’s most challenging period ever, with climate change, fluctuating production levels, and surging global demand driving the global cost of un-roasted (green) coffee to the highest it’s ever been.
The grind behind the price hike
Coffee prices have always fluctuated, but the last 6 months have seen an unprecedented increase. Green coffee bean prices are nearly double what they were only a year ago, driven by a perfect storm of factors:
Climate change – Extreme weather events, from droughts to seasonal frosts, have impacted yields in key growing regions like Brazil and Vietnam.
Global supply chain pressures – Logistical challenges, including disruptions at major shipping routes, have added complexity to coffee transportation.
Increase in demand – We’re all drinking more coffee than ever before but the biggest increase is particularly happening in China.
A growing thirst for coffee
In 2023, China’s coffee consumption surged by 15%, with projections showing continued rapid growth. While per capita consumption remains lower than in Western countries, China’s booming coffee culture is shifting the global coffee landscape. As more consumers in emerging markets embrace coffee culture, the simple impact will mean pushing prices higher across the board.
